In the lush countryside of Sussex, England, one extraordinary woman embodies the spirit of compassion and dedication. At 90, Barby Keel has spent over five decades tirelessly rescuing animals, offering them a second chance at life through her sanctuary.

Barby Keel’s journey began in the 1970s with a simple promise: to care for a soldier’s dog while he was away. Little did she know, this act of kindness would spark a lifelong commitment to animal rescue. The soldier’s dog never left her side, and soon, a few cats joined the family. Fast forward to today, and Barby’s sanctuary stretches across 12 picturesque acres, home to over 600 animals, including delightful cats, playful rabbits, resilient pigs, and even horses that gallop freely.

“In the early days, I only had about 40 cats,” Barby recalls with a smile. “Then came the sheep, goats, and pigs.” For two decades, she managed the sanctuary on her own, pouring her heart and soul into every critter that came her way. Now, her tireless efforts are supported by an enthusiastic team of volunteers who share her love for animals saved from neglect and abuse.

Despite facing cancer three times, Barby greets each day with unwavering optimism. Rising at 7 a.m., she tends to her beloved creatures, claiming, “I never take a day off.” When the workload feels overwhelming, a gentle nose nudging her leg reminds her of the joy her work brings. “Some days are tough, but the love they give back is endless,” she says.

Her dedication to animals goes beyond mere care—it’s a way of life. In a moment of profound choice, she ended a serious relationship rather than abandon her mission. “I packed his bags,” she recalls matter-of-factly. “My animals come first, always.”

Today, the Barby Keel Animal Sanctuary operates as a nonprofit, thriving on the generosity of the community. Recently reopened to the public, it invites visitors every Sunday through October 2025. Families can meet the animals, explore a cozy café, and shop for souvenirs, creating cherished memories while learning about the sanctuary’s incredible stories.

Moreover, Barby finds innovative ways to support local pet owners. Using her own pension, she buys pet food in bulk, offering it at reduced prices to those in need. “I’m incredibly grateful for my wonderful volunteers and all the kind-hearted supporters,” she shares, visibly moved. “I may not be able to do everything, but I still rise early to check on the cats. It’s a beautiful life I lead.”

And what’s the secret behind her remarkable endurance? A simple routine: “Hard work and a hearty breakfast of beans every morning,” she laughs, illustrating her down-to-earth nature.
