With the rise of urban development and shifting agricultural practices, honey bees are finding it increasingly challenging to find adequate nutrition. “They thrive on a diverse diet, but unfortunately, it’s becoming harder for them to access the pollen they need,” explains WSU’s Professor Brandon Hopkins. This new food source is ingeniously designed to address these nutritional gaps, enabling bees to better support both their colonies and our crops.

A Collaborative Effort

The journey to create this breakthrough has not been easy. It’s been over a decade of painstaking research, involving teamwork across three dedicated groups. As Thierry Bogaert, a lead author from APIX Biosciences, emphasized, “This project is a testament to collaborative science.” From testing countless ingredient combinations to large-scale field trials, every effort has contributed to a brighter future for pollinators.

A key discovery in this research is a special molecule called isofucosterol, naturally found in pollen. This nutrient has shown to be crucial for honey bee health—colonies that received a diet enriched with isofucosterol demonstrated remarkable vitality, enduring an entire season without conventional pollen.

Real-Life Impact

To truly understand the effectiveness of this new feed, the WSU team conducted real-world trials in blueberry and sunflower fields—locations notorious for poor pollen quality. The results were encouraging: colonies fed the new nutrition-rich food flourished, displaying higher survival rates and steady growth compared to those receiving standard supplements.

“Many beekeepers had given up pollinating blueberry fields due to high mortality rates in colonies,” shared Professor Hopkins. “However, with this innovative food source, they may reconsider, knowing their bees have a better chance of thriving.” This newfound hope could very well reinvigorate the beekeeping community across the U.S.

As the research progresses, there’s tangible excitement within the beekeeping community about the potential benefits of this new bee food. Dr. Patrick Pilkington, CEO of APIX Biosciences US, conveyed optimism: “We believe this product will make a significant impact once it’s available for beekeepers and farmers, with plans for its release slated for mid-2026.”
