These membranes are crucial in hydrogen-powered technologies, found in environmentally friendly vehicles such as cars, trains, and buses. Dr. Jake Yang, a researcher from the university’s chemistry department, expressed his excitement about the discovery, stating, “This method is simple and scalable. We can now separate PFAS membranes from precious metals without harsh chemicals—revolutionizing how we recycle fuel cells.”

The team’s innovative approach involves soaking the membranes in organic solvents followed by a technique known as ultra-sonication. This process creates tiny, powerful bubbles that collapse under pressure, effectively dismantling the membranes and freeing the valuable catalysts in mere seconds.
