Coffee has long been a cherished part of Ethiopian culture and economy, significantly impacting the lives of 15 million people, especially small-scale farmers. The country stands as one of the global leaders in coffee production, and its unique, biodiversity-rich environment holds great promise for sustainable agriculture.

In the lush Ilu Ababor Zone of Oromia, where the famous Coffea arabica is native, a transformative project sparked hope among coffee growers. With the guidance of Farm Africa, local farmers engaged in sustainable practices that prioritized both their livelihoods and the forests they depended on for survival.

Between 2021 and 2024, over 4,000 coffee growers collaborated through 19 forest management cooperatives, eager to learn and adapt their farming methods. They embraced innovative techniques that allowed them to cultivate their resources without sacrificing the rich forests around them. Imagine a community gathered for workshops, sharing ideas, and supporting one another in this journey of growth.

Farmers learned how to plant fast-growing firewood trees, ensuring they wouldn’t overharvest from their precious forests. Six nurseries sprang to life, staffed by locals who were becoming experts in reforestation and sustainable practices. As the trees took root, something beautiful emerged—300,000 seedlings were planted, breathing new life into over 5,000 acres of land.

The benefits quickly became evident. Thanks to climate-smart innovations, such as bamboo cultivation for drying coffee, farmers reduced their reliance on distant resources. A remarkable 66% of households shifted to energy-efficient stoves, significantly lowering their fuel consumption.

As the farmers embraced these methods, their fortunes began to flourish. The number of growers adopting climate-friendly techniques leaped from 49% to 76%. Incomes surged, yielding an impressive 280% increase compared to previous years. This uplift allowed families to not only thrive but to trade their excess produce, bringing fresh fruits and vegetables to their communities.

Notably, the volume of export-quality coffee from the Ilu Ababor region surged, with 73% now meeting global standards, while the specialty grade coffee increased significantly. The recognition and respect for local farmers grew, as one cooperative leader, Abde Musa, explained:

“Prior to the project, our limited knowledge meant we had to sell our coffee to local traders at lower prices. Now we’ve taken control and are the ones negotiating and determining the coffee prices.”

Farm Africa also provided essential training in business management and quality control, enabling cooperatives to negotiate better deals and maximize their profits. One standout group astonishingly grossed $58,500 from their coffee sales alone!

As incomes nearly doubled and financial services became readily available, deforestation plummeted to an impressive 0.08 acres per year. The report celebrating this endeavor highlights not only the numbers but also the heartfelt changes in lives, emphasizing how African challenges are best addressed with local solutions.

With stories of success echoing throughout the project, including impressive revenue growth for cooperatives and the elevation of women in agriculture, the narrative shines a light on resilience, hope, and the power of community.

Join us in sharing this exceptional journey of rejuvenation and empowerment in the green hills of Africa.
