On Thursday, Meta partnered with Anduril Industries, a defense tech startup, to develop mixed reality tools designed for soldiers, allowing them to manage autonomous technologies in combat situations.

The collaboration will bring together Meta’s augmented reality and artificial intelligence technology—likely through devices like smart glasses or goggles—with Anduril’s data analysis platform known as Lattice, according to a statement from both companies.

“Over the past ten years, Meta has been focused on creating AI and AR that will shape the future of tech,” remarked Mark Zuckerberg, Meta’s CEO, in the announcement.

“We are excited to join forces with Anduril to provide these innovations to American servicemen and women who safeguard our nation and its interests.”

Since Donald Trump regained the presidency, Zuckerberg has made several visits to the White House and adjusted corporate policies on issues like content moderation to align more closely with the Republican agenda. He even purchased a $23 million home in Washington, D.C.

Through this collaboration with Anduril, Meta will become more involved in engaging with the U.S. military.

Palmer Luckey, the founder of Anduril and also a co-founder of the virtual reality company Oculus—which Facebook acquired in 2014—expressed his enthusiasm about working with Meta again, saying, “I am thrilled to collaborate with Meta once more. My goal has always been to empower soldiers with advanced technology, and our products embody this vision.”

Luckey’s departure from Facebook in 2017 followed legal troubles over Oculus Rift and controversy regarding his support for a pro-Trump online group during the prior election.

Open support for Trump was rare within Silicon Valley during that election cycle, and some creators even boycotted Oculus software development due to Luckey’s political activities.

After leaving Facebook, Luckey co-founded Anduril.

Anduril characterizes its Lattice platform as an AI-driven command and control system that amalgamates information from countless sources, delivering real-time battlefield insights to assist decision-making.

Major tech companies are increasingly expressing nationalistic sentiments in Washington, coinciding with Trump’s America First policy.

Leading the charge are firms like Meta, OpenAI, and Palantir—the AI defense entity established by Peter Thiel, a conservative tech mogul influential in Silicon Valley’s political shift.

Meta has emphasized the necessity of AI technologies like its own, arguing they are crucial for the U.S. to outperform China in the AI race and maintain its technological supremacy.
