A short metro ride from the Ahoy Arena in Rotterdam, excited fans are gathering, sporting TwitchCon passes and playful accessories like animal ears.
This weekend, Rotterdam is buzzing with TwitchCon, a major event organized by the popular streaming service Twitch, where fans can connect with their favorite content creators and join in the festivities.
Larissa, a 24-year-old from the Netherlands, shared her excitement: “I started during the lockdown, and I love putting on the costume while I work on cosplay and other projects.” Dressed as a half-cyborg, half-minotaur character with green skin and striking red eyes, this is her second time attending TwitchCon.
She noted how cosplay creates a sense of community: “I’ve met so many amazing people here. When you’re in cosplay, others often recognize your character, and you instantly have something in common to discuss.”
Electrifying Atmosphere
Like Larissa, thousands of attendees from across Europe are excited to engage with their favorite streamers and watch live esports competitions featuring games like Fortnite and Elden Ring hosted by Twitch stars.
Mary Kish, a marketing director at Twitch, emphasized the unique environment of TwitchCon, saying, “Most interactions on Twitch happen online, but at TwitchCon, all the goodwill and excitement culminates into an electric atmosphere in person.”
Notable French streamers JL Tomy and Etoiles, who boast 1.3 million and 1.2 million followers respectively, also made an appearance. “It’s a blast to meet fellow partners who share my passion,” said JL Tomy, whose real name is Toma Abdellaoui. “Iām usually a homebody, focusing my streams on games like GTA, Valorant, and League of Legends.”
Since Amazon acquired Twitch in 2014 for about $842 million, it has become the leading platform for gaming streams with about 2.5 million viewers on average each hour.
While gaming remains essential, Twitch has also expanded into other areas, attracting entertainers, athletes, and public figures, as well as live-streaming various major events.
Kish noted that the “Just Chatting” category, focusing on casual conversation, has now become the biggest non-gaming section on the platform. “You can find a huge variety of content, from cooking to aquarium showcases,” she added.
In line with this variety, attendees participated in theater workshops, built Lego models, and enjoyed a popular Drag Queen show that has become a staple of TwitchCon.
The next TwitchCon event in North America is set for October 17ā19, 2025, in San Diego.
