In a shining example of progress, a coal power plant nestled in Utah is embarking on a remarkable journey towards sustainability. After years of powering hundreds of thousands of homes across six states, the Intermountain Power Project (IPP) is set for a spectacular transformation—from coal to hydrogen fuel.

Since its establishment, the IPP has played a crucial role in keeping the lights on, but it’s also clear that the future of energy needs to pivot towards greener alternatives. With coal contracts nearing their end, the visionaries at the Intermountain Power Agency (IPA)—a coalition of 23 municipalities—began brainstorming ways to phase out coal in favor of cleaner energy sources.

In 2015, the agency started exploring the feasibility of replacing the coal burners with advanced gas turbines capable of operating on a blend of natural gas and hydrogen. Fast forward to today, and work is well underway! The plan involves using renewable energy to produce hydrogen through electrolysis, ensuring that 30% of the energy blend is powered by this zero-emission fuel.

The immense potential of hydrogen fuel lies in its flexibility. Instead of electricity disappearing if not used immediately, hydrogen can be stored and burned according to the community’s demands. This adaptability means we can rely on it even when the sun doesn’t shine or the wind doesn’t blow.

With a whopping $1.7 billion earmarked for the construction of new generating units and another $2.7 billion for upgrading the transmission system, this project is nothing short of monumental. Over 2,000 dedicated workers have already contributed more than five million labor hours to this transformative effort, showcasing the community’s commitment to a greener future.

Part of the renovation plan includes drilling access tubes deep into two enormous caverns beneath the plant, which can store the equivalent of 4.5 million barrels of oil. “We’re truly fortunate,” shared John Ward, an IPA spokesman. “The original Intermountain Power Project is built right above a unique geologic salt dome, providing us with an incredible opportunity for long-term energy storage.”

In collaboration with the Department of Energy, which has approved a $504 million loan guarantee for this ambitious **Advanced Clean Energy Storage Delta**, the project aims to convert over 220 megawatts of renewable energy into 100 metric tons of green hydrogen every day.
