The Switch 2 has set a new record as the fastest-selling gaming console, with an impressive 3.5 million units sold in just four days, according to Nintendo’s announcement on Wednesday.

This updated console boasts a larger display and enhanced processing power, making it a significant improvement over the original Switch, which is currently the third-best-selling gaming system ever.

Launched last Thursday, it generated massive excitement worldwide, leading to pre-orders selling out and stores opening at midnight.

Nintendo revealed that the Switch 2 has achieved “the highest global sales for any Nintendo device within the first four days.”

It has outperformed previous records as well, surpassing both the original Switch’s 2.7 million and Sony’s PlayStation 5’s 3.4 million units sold in their first month.

The big question now is whether Nintendo can maintain this enthusiasm for the long haul, similar to the original’s success.

The first Switch, which saw a surge in popularity during the pandemic thanks to popular games like “Animal Crossing,” has sold 152 million units since its debut in 2017.

Darang Candra, an analyst with Niko Partners, warned that keeping up this sales momentum could be a challenge.

He suggested that consumers may be rushing to buy due to concerns over potential price increases linked to possible tariffs from the United States.

According to Candra, the long-term success for the Switch 2 will hinge on Nintendo’s ability to maintain player engagement with new game releases and to expand into new markets, particularly in regions like the Middle East and other parts of Asia.

Analysts anticipated that Nintendo could achieve record early sales with the Switch 2.

Higher Price Tag

Nintendo expects to sell 15 million Switch 2 units in the current financial year, aiming for sales figures similar to those of the original during its first year.

However, they must persuade consumers to embrace the higher price of the new console.

The Switch 2 is priced at $449.99 in the U.S., compared to $299.99 at the launch of the original Switch.

Both consoles function as hybrids, allowing users to connect them to a TV or enjoy gaming on the go.

Upcoming games like “Donkey Kong Bananza” and “Mario Kart World,” which promise exciting off-grid adventures, are also priced higher than current Switch games.

According to Candra, the price for the Switch 2 in the U.S. seems to be a strategic decision by Nintendo to mitigate potential impacts from U.S. tariffs.

A model sold exclusively in Japan has a lower price of 49,980 yen (about $350).

Nintendo indicated that most hardware for North America is manufactured in Vietnam, where the U.S. government has threatened to impose tariffs of 46%.

This new console offers eight times the memory of the original and features controllers that attach magnetically and can serve as a mouse for desktop use.

Additions like online chat capabilities and the option to temporarily share games could appeal to younger players who enjoy watching game live streams.

Success is vital, as while Nintendo is expanding into movies and various other areas, around 90% of its income is still derived from the Switch business.
