Email :1

In a delightful intersection of architecture and community, a unique project is transforming the landscape of Java’s libraries. With vibrant designs and eco-friendly materials, these microlibraries not only foster a love for reading but also create inviting spaces for imaginations to flourish.

Imagine walking through the streets of Java and stumbling upon a colorful microlibrary that feels like stepping into a whimsical storybook. This innovative project, led by the Dutch and German firm SHAU, aims to enhance literacy among children while providing a cool retreat from the tropical heat.

Since its inception in 2012, the initiative has successfully built eight secondary libraries, each more inspiring than the last. By using local materials and time-tested cooling techniques, the architects have ingeniously crafted spaces that help children read comfortably. Nature’s elements like shading and cross-ventilation play crucial roles in creating these airy havens.

The Bima microlibrary in Bandung is especially captivating, constructed with an astonishing 2,000 recycled ice cream tubs. These creatively repurposed materials diligently provide the library with light and airflow, creating an environment that’s both enjoyable and sustainable.

A few miles away, the Warak Kayu microlibrary is set upon stilts, allowing gentle breezes to pass underneath, ensuring its readers remain cool even on the warmest days. Inside, the floor is a supportive rope net, fostering a relaxed atmosphere perfect for immersing oneself in books.

As they look to the future, the partnership behind this incredible venture is committed to building 100 microlibraries over the next 20 years. With each new library, children find themselves more connected to the magic of reading, turning pages and discovering worlds beyond their own.

Join us in celebrating this inspiring initiative that nurtures the love of books in the heart of Indonesia!
