In an inspiring tale of rejuvenation, a small Italian village transformed its fading streets into a vibrant canvas, breathing new life into its community through art. What began as a grassroots movement has blossomed into an annual celebration of creativity that not only attracts tourists but has also rekindled a sense of pride among locals.
Welcome to Stornara, a charming hamlet in southern Italy that faced the grim label of a “ghost town.” Once bustling with residents, it fell into a slow decline as younger generations ventured to cities seeking more opportunities. The emptiness was palpable, leaving behind crumbling buildings and fading memories.
Local artist Lino Lombardi watched the town he loved slip away and felt an urgent need to take action. In 2017, he ignited a spark of hope by launching Stramurales, an annual street art festival. This initiative invited talented artists from around the globe to create murals that told the town’s story and celebrated its rich heritage. Just a year later, just six murals gave rise to a vibrant collection of over 140 striking pieces, each adorns the walls of homes and shops.

The impact was undeniable. As tourists flocked to see the vibrant murals, local businesses began to thrive once more. Antonio Maglione, who runs a small cafe, shared how he was on the verge of closing his doors before the art movement brought in a wave of visitors. “I had to learn how to welcome tourists in five languages!” he chuckled, noting, “The murals saved my business, but more importantly, they revived our community.”
Rita Gensano, another local who returned to Stornara after living in Turin for two decades, felt a heart-wrenching sense of loss upon her return. “It was like walking into a ghost town,” she recalled. But with the emergence of the artwork, she quickly realized that the town was transforming back into a lively place filled with promise. “It has become something extraordinary,” she said, beaming with pride as she now works as a tour guide.

The success of Stornara’s mural revival has inspired other neglected towns to reach out for guidance. Lombardi expressed his vision: “Our community has painted itself back to life, one wall at a time.” In the beginning, many doubted his ambition, but he was unwavering in his resolve. “I couldn’t stand by and watch my hometown vanish.”
With every stroke of paint, the murals echo the spirit of Stornara—reflecting its agricultural heritage, migrations, and the stories of its people. Each summer, locals vote on themes for new murals, ensuring that the art stays relevant and connected to the community.
This July promises another exciting edition of the festival, welcoming artists from across Europe, and continuing the enchanting journey of Stornara’s revival.
