Every journey through adversity can lead to remarkable collaborations and transformations. This is the story of Willette Benford, who turned her life around after spending years in prison, and her partnership with Illinois First Lady M.K. Pritzker to uplift other women facing similar challenges.

Willette Benford’s life took a drastic turn when she found herself imprisoned for 24 long years. While the situation seemed bleak, her spirit was far from broken. During her time in prison, she set out to make a difference—not just for herself but for others as well.

Determined to reclaim her life, Willette earned her GED and pursued an associate’s degree. She went a step further by becoming an ordained minister, offering guidance and support to her fellow inmates who also sought hope and encouragement. The walls of the prison did not confine her ambition; instead, they became a launching pad for a new beginning.

Upon her release, Willette entered the Grace House, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping women transition back into society after incarceration. It was in this nurturing space that she flourished, and her successes continued stacking up. She was soon employed as a legislative assistant for Chicago Alderman Walter Burnett Jr., showcasing her talent and drive.

“I believe I am living proof of what a fair chance looks like,” Willette shared confidently. Her transformation captured attention, particularly from Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot, who envisioned Willette as a champion for those re-entering society. Mayor Lightfoot appointed her as the city’s first director of re-entry, where her focus was to help others navigate their new beginnings.

One of her notable initiatives aimed at reforming background check procedures, ensuring that past mistakes wouldn’t automatically bar individuals from securing meaningful employment.

As her journey prospered, she caught the eye of M.K. Pritzker, the First Lady of Illinois. M.K. shared Willette’s passion for creating systemic changes, particularly for women leaving incarceration. Their paths intersected when M.K. visited the Grace House, and their partnership ignited from that moment forward.

In 2023, M.K. extended an invitation for Willette to join her office as a senior advisor focused on women’s issues. Together, they forged a powerful alliance, devoted to improving housing, employment, and mental health services for women throughout Illinois. Their mission resonates with hope and determination, bridging the gap for those seeking a second chance.

“Willette brings a unique passion and intellect to this work. I see tremendous potential for transforming lives,” M.K. expressed, believing wholeheartedly in the goodness that resides in everyone. With their combined efforts, they are set to launch a groundbreaking pilot program aimed at supporting 100 recently released women with resources like childcare, housing, and job training.

Thanks to their collaboration, many more women will have the opportunity to rewrite their stories. Willette’s journey reflects the greater lesson of compassion; it’s important never to judge others too harshly, as everyone deserves grace and a second shot at life.

With unwavering commitment, M.K. and Willette are living proof that when diverse backgrounds and experiences unite, powerful changes can emerge. Their combined efforts will surely lead to more inspiring stories of women who transform challenges into success after prison.

Moreover, their mission serves as a reminder to always look for the potential within others, showing that a touch of understanding can change lives.
