In the charming town of Thirsk, North Yorkshire, a heartwarming community effort has emerged to protect a unique family of mallard ducks. Thanks to dedicated volunteers, these feathered friends navigate through town each night, forging bonds with residents and fostering a sense of togetherness.
Every evening at 8:30 PM, a delightful parade begins as 20 mallard ducks waddle from the Cod Beck River to a cozy parking lot in the market square. Here, they snuggle in for a night’s sleep, safe from potential predators. It’s a routine that’s captured the hearts of local residents, thanks to a group of volunteer ‘duck wardens’ who ensure the birds cross the roads safely.
The quirky journey began last year when it became clear that the ducks were favoring the parking area for their evening rest. Initially, this decision led to tragedy, as four ducks unfortunately lost their lives on the roads. In response, one resident, Jodie Wood, initiated a Facebook group to rally help, and soon after, a loving community stepped up to safeguard the feathered family.
Today, around 15 volunteers take turns overseeing the ducks’ nightly trek. Among them is Emma-Jayne Hutchings, 48, a business advisor who finds joy in escorting the quacking procession. “It’s heartwarming to see them march in pairs, like little soldiers,” she shares, smiling at the thought.

As the ducks settle down, volunteers are on the lookout, placing traffic cones around them to create a protective barrier. This thoughtful gesture helps ensure that the sleeping ducks remain undisturbed until the early morning hours when they awaken and begin their journey back to the river.
Community support has blossomed through this initiative. Local businesses, like the Mowbray Arms pub, have joined in, providing warm beverages for the volunteers as they keep watch. Everyone feels a part of something special, forging friendships over their shared mission.
“It’s incredible how this little effort has fostered such a strong sense of community,” Emma-Jayne notes. “We’re all here to make sure the ducks are safe, and it’s brought us together.”
The mallards’ journey has continued each night, from mid-June until December, bringing smiles and camaraderie to the residents. While the volunteers don’t actively encourage the ducks to cross, they respect their choices and provide assistance when needed.

As they navigate their nightly adventure, the ducks remind the town of the beauty of coming together for a common cause. With each quack, they symbolize the warmth of community spirit, a lovely reminder that even the smallest efforts can lead to profound connections.
“We’re lucky to have this wonderful support system,” Jodie reflects. “It’s not just about the ducks; it’s about us as a community.”
