Within the expansive 47-acre Recology recycling and recovery facility, an extraordinary world unfolds. Every day, an astounding 100 tons of materials flow through this hub, setting the stage for creativity to flourish. But this isn’t just about sorting waste; it’s about reimagining it. Since 1990, Recology has embraced artists, offering them a unique opportunity to gather materials that most would overlook and breathe new life into them.

The Artists-in-Residence program has become a beacon of innovation, providing artists with not only a stipend but also a dedicated space to explore their imaginations. Clad in safety gear and armed with shopping carts, these talented individuals dive into a treasure trove of cast-offs, unearthing gems from among the discarded.

One such artist, Neil Mendoza, is a perfect example of this transformative process. With his cart full of reclaimed materials, he makes his way to the well-equipped art studio, where tools abound and possibilities are endless. The highlight of each residency culminates in a public exhibition showcasing the artists’ creations, bridging the gap between imagination and community.

Recently, the energy was electric as the Recology facility hosted an exhibition celebrating 35 years of creativity. Thousands of visitors gathered to witness a dazzling display of artistic innovation, where 63 artists presented their unique interpretations of the potential in waste. The term ’trash to treasure’ couldn’t have resonated more fully; each piece told a story of reinvention.

Among the artists, Nemo Gould stood out with his striking depiction of an impala, crafted from an eclectic mix of items from antlers to meat grinders. Such bold creations highlight the boundless potential of reused materials, emphasizing a core theme among the artists: transformation through creativity.

The Recology program has opened doors for over 190 professional and 60 student artists over the years. They span a myriad of disciplines—painting, sculpture, video, and beyond—exploring new mediums with an unwavering commitment to sustainability and art.

As the exhibition runs through the summer, it offers a space for families and art lovers to immerse themselves in this uplifting artistic journey. “It’s a wonderful opportunity to engage with art at no cost,” shared Recology spokesperson Robert Reed. “And we’re taking this initiative on the road with a traveling exhibition.”
