Traditionally, logging devastated many forest areas. However, studies revealed that when transparent logging practices ceased, the land often fell into disrepair. Illegal logging, poaching, and unchecked agriculture would infiltrate these abandoned spots, leaving wildlife vulnerable.

This new approach, however, involves carefully logging a limited number of mature trees over a strategic thirty-year span. By doing so, the forest remains intact, and families benefit from the profits of sustainably sourced hardwood. It’s a win-win for both people and wildlife.

Take the sprawling Kutai National Park, for instance—a remote area often shrouded in secrecy where illegal activities thrive. Astonishingly, approximately 80% of the orangutans live outside the safety of protected zones, right next to forest villages. This unique relationship has led to the protection of an impressive 1.3 million acres of habitat by local guardians dedicated to ecotourism, honey production, and, most importantly, conservation.

Support from the Indonesian government plays a vital role in these efforts, especially since Borneo is the world’s third-largest island. International interest brings in substantial donations, like those from Arhaus, a furniture maker dedicated to sustainability. Such collaborations are essential for empowering these communities and ensuring lasting change.

Matt Miller, the director of science communications for the Nature Conservancy, personally witnessed this inspiring movement. The local community, filled with passion and determination, views themselves as the true guardians of the forest.

“The communities are the leaders here,” a program director shared with Miller. “They are the key to Borneo’s forests and biodiversity. Our role is to empower them, to support their dreams.”
