Where Nature Meets Nurture: Discover the Harmonious New Tourism Havens at the Heart of the Rocky Geopark

In a stunning blend of nature and architecture, a Dutch design firm has transformed a beloved Taiwanese geopark into an enchanting haven. This story showcases how thoughtful design can harmonize with the environment, inviting both locals and tourists to experience the beauty of nature like never before.

Jialeshui, located in Southern Taiwan’s Pingtung County, has long captured the hearts of visitors with its extraordinary rock formations, sculpted over millennia by wind and sea. However, the area’s existing infrastructure was in dire need of an upgrade. Recently, the local government selected a captivating design proposal from the architecture firm MVRDV, in collaboration with HWC Architects, aimed at enhancing accessibility without overshadowing the stunning natural backdrop.

Dubbed “Nature Rocks,” this innovative project reimagines the park by drawing inspiration from its geological features. Imagine walking pathways that mimic the contours of the rocks themselves, gracefully guiding visitors through the landscape. MVRDV’s design melds seamlessly with the rocky formations, celebrating the area’s natural beauty rather than imposing upon it. Winy Maas, a founding partner of MVRDV, beautifully encapsulated the vision: “We wanted to let architecture emerge from the landscape, breaking up monotony and emphasizing that Nature Rocks.”

The new design maintains a respectful distance from untouched areas, focusing development on sites that have already been altered. The concept introduces pathways that undulate like the rugged coastline, knitting together the vibrant forest and the rocky shoreline.

Rock-like formations punctuate the landscape, creating zones for exploration and social interaction. Some of these formations take the shape of functional buildings that echo the impressive natural rock structures surrounding them.

As visitors approach the entrance, they’re welcomed by a trio of imaginative buildings that resemble monumental rocks. The largest acts as the heart of the park, housing a visitor center, a cozy café, and a shop filled with local crafts. Next to it, a space dedicated to exhibitions and environmental education sparks curiosity, while the third structure offers crucial restroom facilities.

The main building, with its roof designed as a stargazing terrace, offers breathtaking views that beckon guests to simply pause and enjoy. Surrounding this entrance is a series of gentle plateaus and plazas crafted for events, markets, or just taking in the landscape.

The transformation of the former straight and narrow road into a vibrant pedestrian-friendly route is equally exciting. It will now accommodate visitors traveling on foot, by bicycle, or via shuttle buses, all while creating dedicated areas for rest and relaxation. Stops along the route highlight points of interest, including lookouts and a charming waterfall, where outdated structures give way to new viewpoints and kiosks, enriching the overall experience.

With “Nature Rocks,” the community not only gains a refreshed space to celebrate its unique environment but also inspires a deeper connection to the natural world. This project exemplifies how creative thinking and respect for nature can come together to create something truly special.
