In an unexpected twist of fate, two remarkable women became everyday heroes by saving intoxicated raccoons in a heartwarming series of events. Their compassion and quick thinking not only saved lives but also brought joy and laughter to their communities, proving that kindness knows no bounds.
One crisp day in Letcher County, Kentucky, nurse Misty Combs was going about her routine at the health department. Located next to a local distillery, the area was lively with the buzz of the day. Little did she know that her day would take a delightful turn, filled with unexpected adventure.
As Misty stepped outside, she noticed a raccoon acting unusually. Curiosity piqued, she followed it to a nearby dumpster. It turned out to be quite the scene—a couple of juvenile raccoons had climbed inside and got stuck, likely lured by the scent of discarded fermented peaches.
“We have to help them!” she exclaimed, a sense of urgency bubbling within her as she observed the mother raccoon anxiously trying to rescue her young ones. With a shovel in hand, Misty carefully pulled one raccoon to safety. However, the second one was unresponsive, submerged in water that was anything but safe.
Determined to save it, Misty leaped into action, administering CPR to the little creature that was quite literally “dead drunk.” “At first, I was gently patting its back, but soon I realized I needed to get serious,” she recalled with a mix of concern and adrenaline. She adeptly maneuvered the tiny body, using one hand to perform chest compressions.
To her astonishment, and relief, the raccoon started to show signs of life. Animal control swiftly arrived to take the little one to a vet for some much-needed TLC. Misty returned to work, but the story didn’t end there. A few days later, she had the heartwarming honor of releasing the raccoon, whom she and her colleagues affectionately named “Otis Campbell,” back into the wild to reunite with its family.
This wasn’t the only raccoon rescue making waves. Over in Canada, waitress Crystal Bakaluk experienced a similar call to duty when she spotted a baby raccoon struggling in the ocean. With no hesitation, she dove in, swimming against the pull of the waves to reach the tiny animal.
“I knew I had to save it,” Crystal shared, recounting the moment the little furball was on the verge of going under. After a few careful pumps on its chest in the water, the raccoon coughed and was safely handed off to her surprised colleagues at the Lighthouse Pub. With drenched hair and squishy shoes, Crystal returned to her tables, but not before receiving warm cheers for her selfless act.
These incredible stories remind us that compassion and bravery can manifest in the most unexpected ways and that even the smallest creatures deserve a second chance.
