From Pandemic Pause to Empowering Pages: Teen Marks 5 Years of Inspiring Joy in Kids with Disabilities Through the Magic of Reading

In a heartwarming tale of compassion and creativity, a young boy named Asher Rosenfeld turned his love for reading into a lifeline for children in need. By starting his initiative, “Audibles with Asher,” he not only enriched the lives of others during a challenging time but also forged lasting friendships along the way.

When the world was learning to adapt to the challenges of the pandemic in 2020, 12-year-old Asher found himself in a unique position. As the city went into lockdown, he noticed how isolated many children, particularly those with special needs, were feeling. Determined to make a difference, he created “Audibles with Asher,” a weekly reading program conducted over Zoom.

Asher wanted to provide a sense of routine and joy to these kids, something they could look forward to amid the uncertainties. Now, five years since that first session, the connections he forged have only grown deeper. As a 17-year-old today, he continues to read to the same children with whom he started this journey, proving that bonds built on kindness endure.

The beauty of this program lies in its accessibility. No matter the challenges they face, each child can join in the comfort of their home. Asher’s commitment has not only been a source of joy for the participants but a lifebuoy for their families, who express gratitude for the light it brings into their children’s lives.

“The same kids I started reading with back in seventh grade are still with me now that I’m a senior,” Asher shares, reflecting on the growth they’ve experienced together. Each reading session has transformed from just an activity into a cherished moment filled with laughter, learning, and friendship.

“We’ve really grown up together,” he adds, emphasizing the rich relationships developed over the years. “It’s no longer just about the stories; it’s the connections we’re making that truly matter.” His realization reveals a profound understanding of empathy, highlighting how important human connection is, especially in times of crisis.

His work continues to impact many, and parents are vocal about their appreciation. One mother, Karen, expressed her gratitude, saying, “Asher is so kind and reads beautifully to my girls. They can’t wait for their sessions!”

“Reading is a magic portal, taking us far beyond our everyday lives,” Asher explains with enthusiasm. “It’s such a joy to share that passion and connect over stories that we can explore together.” His loving spirit and dedication continue to inspire others, making a positive change in a community that truly needs it.
