Back in the late 2010s, something remarkable blossomed in Pittsburgh—a food rescue initiative that aimed to combat two serious issues: food waste and hunger. It was a mission driven by the belief that food, which can nourish so many, should never go to waste.

Enter 412 Food Rescue, a vibrant community effort that connected local businesses with generous volunteers willing to save surplus food. Utilizing an intuitive app called Food Rescue Hero, volunteers could quickly find food donations that were either nearing their sell-by dates or had become unsellable for cosmetic reasons.

Imagine a bustling city where more than 25,000 community members became volunteer drivers, eagerly stepping in to collect food from participating businesses. They transformed this potential waste into a lifeline for those in need. The journey often ended at the Good Food Project kitchen in Millvale, Pittsburgh, where incredible culinary teams whipped up thousands of meals each day.

By 2019, their efforts had produced an astounding 57 million meals, saving approximately 70 million pounds of food from being thrown away. Not only did this nourish countless individuals, but it also prevented around 30 million pounds of harmful greenhouse gases from entering our atmosphere.

Fast forward to 2025, and the impact of 412 Food Rescue has multiplied significantly. The organization expanded its reach beyond Pennsylvania, linking up with partners in states like Illinois and Texas. Together, they rescued tens of millions of pounds of food, which translated into a reduction of an estimated 102 million pounds of greenhouse gas emissions. This achievement is equivalent to removing over 4,000 cars from the roads for an entire year!

In a country where about 40% of food is wasted while one in seven people struggles with hunger, these efforts are not just commendable; they’re essential. “People are naturally inclined to do good,” said Alyssa Cholodofsky, CEO of Food Rescue Hero. “Our incredible community proves that time and again.”
