Unfortunately, due to habitat destruction and an eelgrass disease in the 1930s, these delightful mollusks disappeared, leaving the waters eerily silent for nearly a century.

However, hope came in the form of a dedicated group of scientists from William & Mary’s Batten School and VIMS. In 1997, they launched a trailblazing project aimed at restoring the seagrass that the bay scallops once called home. Over the years, the project grew to become one of the largest and most successful seagrass restoration efforts globally, nurturing not just the scallops but an entire ecosystem.

Fast forward to 2025, the results of their hard work are nothing short of miraculous. A recent survey revealed an astonishing proliferation of bay scallops, with researchers often finding several scallops packed into a single square meter—an unbelievable recovery from years past. The enthusiasm in the air was palpable as they report that the population might double in less than 18 months.

“Watching the success unfold has been incredibly fulfilling,” shared Darian Kelley, a nursery manager at VIMS ESL involved in the project. The joy of seeing life return to these waters is a testament to the perseverance and passion of everyone involved.
