These pesky invaders not only feasted on the eggs and chicks of the doves but also disrupted the delicate balance of life on the island. The native plants were suffering, and the food web was at risk of collapsing. But, thanks to the relentless efforts of conservation teams, the tide began to turn.

After a thorough year of monitoring that included trail cameras and environmental DNA sampling, the news was uplifting—there were no more invasive rodents on Ulong Island! This significant achievement sparked hope for the future of conservation in Palau and beyond.

As the invasive threat vanished, nature began to reclaim its beauty. Within this short span, the monitoring team observed the ground doves flourishing, with delightful sightings of fluffy chicks where they had never been recorded before.

Coral Wolf, the Impact Program Manager from Island Conservation, expressed her excitement: “The results are thrilling. We’re seeing and hearing recovery! Since our program started, bird calls have significantly increased. Just a year after the eradication, the signs are promising for what’s yet to come.”

These victories are just the beginning. The revitalization of Ulong Island is not only a boon for the birds but also sets a healthy precedent for the entire marine ecosystem. Rebuilding connections between land and sea enhances the richness of biodiversity.
