In a delightful twist of fate, a massive pumpkin turned into an unexpected feast for Henry, a playful polar bear living at the Cochrane Polar Bear Habitat. This story isn’t just about a bear and a pumpkin—it’s a celebration of spontaneity, joy, and the little surprises life has to offer!

As the sun peeked over the horizon at the Cochrane Polar Bear Habitat in Ontario, Henry, a majestic polar bear weighing a staggering 1,200 pounds, wandered around his enclosure. Little did he know that something extraordinary was waiting for him—something far bigger than he was.

A giant, 1,400-pound pumpkin sat gleaming in his enclosure—uninvited yet irresistible. At first, Henry stared at the enormous gourd with a mix of curiosity and wariness, unsure of what to make of this peculiar intruder. But soon, his natural instincts kicked in, and he began to explore the sweet, crunchy flesh of this unexpected delicacy.

This unexpected treat arrived at the habitat purely by chance. As Amy Baxendell-Young, the manager of the Cochrane Polar Bear Habitat, recounted to the local news, one of her staff members was traveling when they spotted a truck carrying the massive pumpkin on the highway. Noticing the logo on the side, Amy decided to reach out.

“They told us that if we didn’t take it, it would just go to compost,” she explained. With that, the pumpkin made its way to Henry, who had no idea what was about to become his new favorite snack.

While polar bears traditionally feast on seals, Henry wasn’t shy about digging into this huge pumpkin. In mere moments, he was tearing apart the bright orange flesh, showcasing his impressive strength and playful spirit. Pictures shared by the habitat captured him in a joyful food coma, having devoured nearly a third of the pumpkin in record time.

The Cochrane Polar Bear Habitat is unique, providing sanctuary to polar bears that can no longer thrive in the wild. They often receive generous gifts like this pumpkin during Polar Bear Awareness Week. This special occasion reminds us of the beauty of giving and the joy it can bring to all beings, even the great and fearsome polar bear.
