The Grand Egyptian Museum finally opened its doors in Giza after a journey that spanned over 20 years, complete with hurdles and triumphs. At a press conference filled with excitement, Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly remarked, “This museum is a gift from Egypt to the entire world.” His words echoed a shared dream of bringing the nation’s past to the forefront of global awareness.

The seeds of this grand project were planted during a chance encounter in 1992, when a visiting Italian designer critiqued the existing storage methods of Egyptian artifacts. Frustration spurred Farouq Hosny, the former culture minister, to propose building “the world’s largest museum in Egypt,” a vision birthed from passion rather than tangible plans.

The journey to bring this vision to life faced numerous obstacles. The 2008 Financial Crisis, regional turmoil, and the global pandemic all took their toll, pushing back the museum’s opening on five different occasions. But through each setback, the dream never waned.

From Egypt with Love

The final cost of this architectural marvel reached $1.2 billion, designed by the talented Heneghan Peng Architects of Ireland. The museum sprawls over 120 acres, aligning its majestic structure with the distant pyramids, creating a harmonious blend of ancient history and modern artistry.
