Every year, Delta Airlines turns dreams into reality with its inspiring “Dream Flights” program, sending ambitious young students soaring into the skies. This heartwarming initiative opens up a world of possibilities for Black teens, igniting their passions for a career in aviation and aerospace.
This year, at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta, 100 enthusiastic teenagers were excited to embark on a special journey aboard a Boeing 757. Together, they were part of Delta’s 24th Dream Flight, designed to empower students by expanding their horizons in the world of aviation.
Partnering with the Organization of Black Aerospace Professionals (OBAP), Delta aims to inspire the next generation of aviators. It’s reminiscent of that powerful moment when Whoopi Goldberg first saw Lieutenant Uhura on Star Trek: “I just saw a black woman on TV, and she ain’t no maid!” That representation is what drives this initiative.
One of the teachers for this journey was Captain Justin Mutawassim, who recalls a pivotal moment in his own life. “When I met my first Black pilot, I realized it was possible for me too,” he shared. Now, as a mentor, he’s proud to show young dreamers like 17-year-old Hayden Lynch that they can follow their passions.
Hayden has long been captivated by flight, sparked by a drone he received for Christmas. On this special day, he looked up to the skies with hope and determination, eager to learn how to navigate his future. At the controls alongside Captain Mutawassim was First Officer Dana Nelson, Delta’s first Black female pilot, solidifying the commitment to diversity within the cockpit.
The crew was rounded out with an all-Black team, including co-pilot Lyob Makonnen, further reinforcing the message that students can pursue their dreams without limits.
The final destination this year was awe-inspiring: NASA’s Kennedy Space Center. As the students wandered through the magnificent exhibits filled with historic rockets and space shuttles, their excitement was palpable. They craned their necks upward, absorbing the legacy of exploration and innovation before them.
The adventure culminated in a powerful panel discussion hosted by OBAP aviators and astronauts. Here, they offered nuggets of wisdom on navigating life’s challenges, both in aviation and beyond. These stories of perseverance and resilience resonated deeply with the students, encouraging them to forge their paths.
Celebrating its 25th anniversary, Delta’s Dream Flight program has inspired over 4,000 students throughout the years. Numerous participants have taken this spark of inspiration and transformed it into careers as pilots and professionals in aerospace engineering.
With bright eyes, Hayden declared, “My dream is to become a Delta pilot one day—and inspire others just like they inspired me.” This sentiment echoes the essence of this remarkable initiative: dreams are not only valid but achievable.
