Sometimes, technology goes above and beyond our expectations, turning moments of sheer panic into incredible stories of survival. This is the tale of one man’s terrifying experience on a dark highway and how an unexpected hero—his self-driving Tesla—kept him safe in a precarious situation.

On the evening of November 9, Clifford Lee found himself cruising along a dimly lit freeway in New Mexico. The clock read 6:30 PM, but the visibility was nil—darkness blanketed the road, making it difficult to spot what lay ahead.

Suddenly, in a split second decision, a truck burst into his lane, attempting to overtake a slower vehicle. With little time to react, Clifford realized that a collision was imminent. The adrenaline surged through him; his heart raced as the reality of the situation sank in. Would he be able to maneuver out of harm’s way?

In a remarkable twist of fate, his Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) mode sprang into action. In a heartbeat, the vehicle swerved onto the shoulder, evading the incoming truck at an astonishing speed of 75 mph. Clifford couldn’t believe it—the car had handled the danger flawlessly, almost as if it knew exactly what needed to be done.

Reflecting on that terrifying moment, Clifford humbly remarked, “FSD saved me; it is beyond anyone’s skill.” He felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude wash over him. If he had been behind the wheel manually, he doubts he would have reacted in time.

Later, when Clifford reviewed the footage from his dashcam, he saw how close the call had been. If the two trucks had collided, it could have been catastrophic. “The driver came out of nowhere,” he recalled, still in disbelief over what had transpired.

In the aftermath, his car reported only minor damages—a broken mirror and a busted window. Fortunately, Clifford emerged from the ordeal shaken but safe. He took to social media to share his experience, posting the video with the words, “FSD saves lives. It happened to me tonight.”
