Unbridled Spirit: How ‘Special Needs’ Kids Are Riding High at Rodeo Day Camp

In the heart of California’s Bay Area, a cherished event celebrates the joy and resilience of children with developmental challenges. The Little ‘Pardners’ Rodeo isn’t just an ordinary day; it’s a heartfelt experience where dreams take flight, laughter fills the air, and every child leaves with a sense of belonging.

Hosted by the warm-hearted cowboy Donnie Perry, this incredible rodeo invites 40 children aged 4 to 17 for a day brimming with cowboy and cowgirl fun. The event, organized by the Exceptional Needs Network in Livermore, is a magical place where kids ride ponies, practice lassoing, and even try out the mechanical bull.

“For many of these kids, it’s hard to find activities where they feel safe and free to have fun,” shares Donnie, the mastermind behind this beautiful gathering. “Everyone dreams of being a cowboy or cowgirl at some point; we’re here to help make that dream a reality.”

Donnie’s passion goes deep; he began hosting the rodeo long before his son, Joshua, was born with Down Syndrome. His journey transformed him, and he expresses that it was a divine gift. “God saw my love and compassion for children with challenges,” he says, his smile wide beneath his iconic moustache.

The Little ‘Pardners’ Rodeo has gained admiration, recently featured on CBS News Bay Area, where it received the prestigious Icon Award. To Donnie, the kids who participate are like his own for the day, and he cherishes every joyful moment with them.

At the rodeo, engaging in new activities fosters a sense of adventure. Although lassoing a calf might seem daunting, the support from everyone around creates an environment where kids can push their limits and try something new.
