In the lush but treacherous expanse of Bolivia’s Amazon, five individuals faced an unimaginable ordeal after their small plane went down in an alligator-ridden swamp. Their journey began with a flight from Baures to Trinidad, led by the brave 29-year-old pilot, Andres Velarde. As the plane cruised through the sky, engine troubles arose, gradually forcing the aircraft into a rapid descent.

Crashing near the Itanomas River, the group—a child, three women, and Velarde—found themselves trapped atop the wreckage. The environment around them was hostile, filled with lurking alligators and other wildlife. For 36 agonizing hours, they remained perched on the fuselage, the suffocating fear of danger ever-present.

“We couldn’t drink water, and moving was not an option with alligators so close,” Velarde recounted, his voice laced with the strain of their harrowing experience. Sleep evaded them, existing instead in a realm of anxiety and survival. The only morsels of comfort came from cassava flour one passenger had brought along, sustaining them through the nightmarish ordeal.

But in the midst of fear, there was a glimmer of hope. The group’s survival was likely aided by leaking fuel that repelled predators, allowing them to endure the fraught hours in relative safety. They caught sight of an anaconda slithering through the nearby water, a reminder of the untamed wilderness that surrounded them.

Finally, their luck changed when local fishermen, on the lookout for anything unusual, stumbled upon the downed aircraft. The astute observation led to swift action as emergency teams were mobilized, leading to the deployment of a helicopter for the daring rescue.

Ruben Torres, the Director of the Beni Region Health Department, celebrated not only the successful outcome but also the collective efforts of various local institutions that had come together to orchestrate the rescue. “I am really happy because, in the end, all the institutions joined together to be able to find the missing people and save those lives,” he shared, embodying the spirit of community and teamwork that made their safe return possible.

Each survivor returned home with a new appreciation for life, a testament to their resilience and the bonds formed in the face of adversity.
