Meet Martine Barons, an inspiring grandmother who found her strength and new passion at 63. Just 18 months after starting her powerlifting journey, she has not only embraced a new identity but has also broken four world records, showcasing that it’s never too late to chase your dreams and redefine what’s possible.

At 65 years old, Martine claims the proud title of “Britain’s strongest grandmother.” Who would have thought that a simple gym session would lead to such remarkable achievements? This energetic mother-of-three, who adores her four grandchildren, began her weightlifting adventure in December 2023, initially just for fun.

Martine stands at 5 feet 6 inches tall, and it wasn’t long before she discovered her extraordinary talent for lifting weights. “I’d always considered myself to be not very good at sports,” she reflected. Yet here she was, dedicating herself to the art of powerlifting, training five times a week for two hours each session— all while juggling her full-time job at Warwick University as an academic researcher.

“It brings me immense joy and a unique sense of fulfillment,” she shared, clearly proud of her newfound strength and mobility. “I never imagined that I’d find such a talent at my age.” Martine’s remarkable journey took off when she first competed in the European Championships in Finland, where she not only participated but won. Her success in Poland for the following European Championship solidified her status as a formidable competitor.

But she didn’t stop there. Just twelve weeks after her triumphs in Europe, Martine took her skills across the ocean, winning again at the World Powerlifting Championship in Idaho. Her victories also include two prestigious titles from the World Championships in Limerick, Ireland, revealing a remarkable streak that many could only dream of.

Reflecting on her incredible journey, Martine elaborated, “Sometimes, I pinch myself in disbelief. Achieving this in just a year and a half is mind-blowing.” It all began by chance during a lighthearted session at the gym with a friend, a physical training instructor who introduced her to the world of weightlifting. Martine recalls, “She was amazed that I could lift 60 kilograms and encouraged me to try more.” Soon, she was lifting 100 kilograms with ease!

Martine set impressive records along the way, including lifting 100 kg (220 lbs) in the squat and an astonishing 155 kg (342 lbs) in the deadlift. Each lift represents not only her physical power but also her determination and spirit. As she shared, “Setting goals keeps me motivated. Competing has brought a rewarding purpose to my life.”

Her future looks bright, with her next big competition lined up at the British Single Lifts Championship at the Arnold Sports Festival in Birmingham. “I never believed I’d be representing my country in this way. It’s an incredible honor!” she exclaimed, her pride evident in her voice.

Martine’s story is a reminder that dreams can blossom from the most unexpected beginnings. It inspires us to keep pushing boundaries and to embrace new adventures, no matter our age.
