A dedicated team of Welsh scientists is tackling a major challenge in agriculture: late potato blight. This sneaky water mold causes a staggering $4 billion in losses every year, impacting farmers and food supplies alike.

Thanks to artificial intelligence, they are working on a smartphone app that can detect the early signs of late blight on potato leaves before they become visible to the naked eye. Imagine farmers getting alerts right on their phones, allowing them to act quickly and protect their crops.

Late blight has historically wreaked havoc; it was a significant factor in three major potato failures across Europe in the 19th century. With nearly 20% of global potato losses attributed to this pathogen, it’s clear that prevention is crucial. Unfortunately, current prevention methods can be expensive and may have harmful side effects on human health and biodiversity due to chemical fungicides.

Enter the DeepDetect project from Aberystwyth University. Collaborating closely with farmers, they’re developing a prototype that relies on extensive image datasets of both healthy and diseased potato leaves. The vision? To create a national early-warning system that could eventually extend beyond Wales, where potatoes are cultivated over 35,000 acres.

As Aiswarya Girija from the Institute of Biological, Environmental and Rural Sciences at Aberystwyth puts it, “Potatoes are the fourth most important staple crop globally, and optimal production is essential for a growing global population.”
