In 2017, severe drought conditions greatly impacted the ecosystem, causing a dramatic decline in the population of Bogong moths—the primary food source for the possums. By 2020, catastrophic bushfires swept through the region, further threatening these delicate creatures’ existence. Experts reported that their numbers had plummeted to just 700.

Enter the local students, who, driven by a sense of duty and love for wildlife, created a special snack for their furry friends. They experimented to develop “Bogong Biscuits”—a mix of macadamia nuts, mealworm, and oils—all crafted to mimic the essence of moth larvae. Their dedication to feeding the possums for two years helped stave off a potential population collapse, which could have seen the number drop to an alarming 500.

Linda Broome, a threatened species officer with the New South Wales Environment Department, could hardly contain her joy as she reported that the population is now nearly back to 1,000. “They’re cute, and they’re very endearing,” she said, emphasizing their unique status as alpine specialists in Australia.

The collaboration between the students and biologists highlights the importance of community action in conservation. As vegetation slowly healed and the number of Bogong moths began to rise again, the mountain pygmy possums started to flourish once more, thanks in large part to the empathy and initiative of a younger generation.
