At Smithills Open Farm in Bolton, UK, farmer Caitlyn Horrocks decided to treat her herd of dairy cows to a lively concert by the Dixiebeats, a six-piece jazz band. The inspiration? She had heard reports that playing jazz could enhance milk production by up to 4%—and frankly, she wanted to see if it would work.

As the band kicked off their 30-minute performance, they played a mix of upbeat and soothing tunes, capturing the attention of the curious cows. According to Caitlyn, “The cows took a little warming up to but they seemed to really enjoy it. They all took turns coming to the front to see what was going on.”

Among them, a particularly enthusiastic cow named Peggy stood out. She stayed right at the fence throughout the entire show, seemingly enchanted by the music. This lively atmosphere transformed the barn into a place brimming with joyful energy, as laughter and mooing harmonized in delightful accord.

This adventurous idea stemmed from an earlier experiment where the farm had simply played jazz over speakers. A video of the cows responding went viral on TikTok, amassing over 266,000 views. Riding on the enthusiasm from that success, the owners decided that nothing could compare to the real thing—live music right in their barn!
