After a significant coral bleaching event in 2023, the future of the staghorn coral population seemed uncertain. But this year, something hopeful emerged as these corals began a remarkable spawning ritual. It’s a rare event that occurs on specific nights of the year, under a perfect blend of temperature, tides, and the glowing influence of the moon.

As the scientists from the Coral Restoration Foundation observed, the staghorn corals synchronized their release of eggs and sperm into the water, creating a breathtaking spectacle akin to a snow globe swirling with life. “Seeing viable eggs means our corals are thriving, and it feels like we’re truly making a difference,” shared Alex Neufeld, a Science Program Manager at the foundation.

This moment, however, was not left to chance. The team understood the fragility of this phenomenon and the challenges posed by environmental changes. Recent bleaching events have disrupted the genetic diversity of reefs, and losing those precious reproductive moments could mean the end for many coral species. The team carefully descended into the evening waters, nets in hand, ready to capture and safeguard the corals’ genetic offerings.

“We have to make sure every coral gets its share,” explained Shayle Matsuda, a diligent ecologist aboard the Shedd Aquarium’s research vessel. “Our goal is to maximize the chance of creating corals that can withstand the changing sea temperatures.”
