In a heartfelt effort to protect local cats, two Dutch cities are collaborating to install tiny staircases alongside their scenic canals. The project aims to help cats escape safely should they happen to fall into the water, addressing a growing concern among pet owners and animal welfare advocates.

This thoughtful initiative began when the Party for the Animals, an animal welfare group, reported a troubling number of feline mishaps in the canals of Amsterdam. Alarmed by the fatalities, the group sought a way to provide much-needed aid for these curious kitties.

When Judith Krom, the leader of the Party, discovered a fund of €100,000 sitting idle in the city’s biodiversity budget, she seized the opportunity. Her proposal to utilize the fund for designing exit points for cats quickly gained traction and enthusiastic support.

Thanks to the backing of Animal Rights councilor Zita Pels, the Amsterdam City Council voted in favor of Krom’s proposal on July 10th. “With simple measures, we can greatly reduce animal suffering,” Krom stated, proud of the city’s stance on animal welfare.

A Pawsitive Change: Plans are in place for the local government to collaborate with Dierenambulance Amsterdam, another dedicated animal welfare organization, to pinpoint the most critical areas where cats frequently fall into the canals.

As part of the initiative, Amersfoort, a charming city located about 31 miles from Amsterdam, plans to construct hundreds of these lifesaving staircases annually. They’ve become a symbol of the community’s commitment to looking out for its furry residents.
