Meet Andy and Sharon Longhurst, a remarkable couple from Scotland with hearts or even hedgehogs! Their unwavering dedication to rescuing and rehabilitating injured hedgehogs is bringing hope to these charming creatures, proving that sometimes, love and compassion can make a world of difference.

In a small town, the Longhursts opened their home to the hedgehogs of the world, creating the Burntisland Hedgehog Haven. It all began in 2023 when they started caring for a mere seven hedgehogs in an upstairs room, but it quickly became evident that their mission was far greater than they had imagined.

Word spread fast, and soon thereafter, their garage transformed into a bustling treatment area for the little spiny creatures. Over two years, the couple poured their heart and soul into fundraising to build a proper care facility in their yard. They established an ICU, set up over 40 rehabilitation cages, and welcomed 18 passionate volunteers to join their cause.

Sharon shared how they became involved in this noble endeavor: “One day in 2022, we spotted a hedgehog lying on the grass verge. We couldn’t just drive past, so we took it on a 50-mile round trip to the nearest wildlife center.” This moment marked the beginning of their journey, leading them to connect with a seasoned rescuer who provided invaluable guidance and support.

The Longhursts, raising three children, found their new passion increasingly consuming their lives. “Every time we tell ourselves we can’t take any more, another call comes in,” Sharon confessed, reflecting on their constant battle between limitations and compassion.

With their garage now serving as a dedicated ward, they expanded their capacity to care for up to 40 hedgehogs. Daily routines involve cleaning, weighing, and monitoring each little guest, ensuring they’re on the path to recovery.

Part of their mission extends beyond direct rescue; they advocate for hedgehog safety in gardens nationwide. From injured spine cases to severe infections, Andy and Sharon handle a spectrum of challenges. When it comes to specialized care, they partner with local vets to ensure that any hedgehog requiring advanced treatment gets the help they need.

Their tireless efforts extended over broadly, providing assistance across various regions, with services reaching Edinburgh to Falkirk. Their hard work even earned them recognition; they were honored with the BBC Make A Difference Award for their compassionate work in the animal category!

Last year, they proudly clinched the ‘Animal All Star’ award, showcasing that even the smallest creatures deserve immense love and care. The Longhursts have become symbols of hope, proving that even in challenging times, empathy can thrive.
