In a world often overwhelmed by challenges, the story of Krystyna Locke is a beautiful reminder of resilience and compassion. After her own long journey through cancer treatment, she is now channeling her strength into helping others feel lighter during their own battles.

Cancer can be a heavy burden, not just physically but financially as well. For many patients approaching treatment, unexpected costs like parking fees can add an unnecessary layer of stress. In certain areas of Canada, some hospitals charge as much as CAD $12 a day for parking, which can really accumulate for patients undergoing lengthy treatments.

This was a reality that Krystyna Locke profoundly understood. Having fought lymphoma for nearly two decades, she knows all too well the hurdles patients face. Now, she has turned her own battle into a mission to ease the path for others.

Recently, on the cusp of her 63rd birthday, Krystyna decided to offer assistance to fellow patients at the Verspeeten Family Cancer Center in Ontario, where she received her own treatment. Through a fundraising campaign, she aims to cover parking costs for those visiting the facility.

“I realized how much the little things matter,” Krystyna said. “For some, coming in for treatment every day can feel daunting enough without worrying about parking. My goal is to bring a little bit of cheer to their day.”

Since her diagnosis in 2004, Krystyna had made countless visits to the clinic, which intensified when her illness evolved to a more aggressive form a few years back. Today, however, she finds herself cancer-free and eager to give back.

“Once I finished my treatments, I wanted to take action,” she explained. “Walking into the clinic for the first time can feel like a jolt. Patients are filled with fear and uncertainty—thinking about parking fees on top of that just adds to the weight.”

During the two weeks surrounding her birthday, Krystyna set up a small booth outside the cancer center, complete with parking vouchers and a cheerful sign reading, “Happy Birthday to me! Your parking is free!”

The response was heartwarming: hugs, smiles, laughter, and shared tears filled the air. “It creates such a light atmosphere,” Krystyna reflected, her voice full of joy. “Every kind word and gesture makes a big difference.”

Carey Landry, director of the South West Regional Cancer Program, praised Krystyna, acknowledging the emotional challenges faced by patients. “Her generosity truly eases some of the burdens during an incredibly tough time,” he said.

Through her campaign, Krystyna has raised over CAD $5,000 so far, with plans to continue this uplifting effort each summer, just in time for her birthday. “I want my children and grandchildren to see the importance of giving back,” she stated.

Krystyna’s efforts not only lift spirits— they’re a powerful testament to how one person can create a ripple of kindness in a community filled with struggle. Her work highlights the simple yet profound ways we can support each other, especially in times of need.

As for the parking fees, a spokesperson from the hospital acknowledged the financial strain on patients but clarified that funds are crucial for hospital services. Unfortunately, the realities of limited parking can push patients towards pricier off-site options.

But with Krystyna’s ongoing kindness, many won’t have to worry about parking costs ever again. Her story is a reminder that compassion can transform lives, making a world of difference when faced with life’s toughest battles.
