In a small village tucked away in Slovakia, Adam Kovalčík is not your typical teenager. With a heart full of curiosity and a mind brimming with ideas, he became the talk of the town after winning the George D. Yancopoulos Innovator Award at the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair in Ohio, a competition renowned for showcasing the brightest young scientists.

His inventive spirit led him to create a faster, more economical way to produce galidesivir, an essential antiviral drug that can combat viruses like Ebola and SARS CoV-2. By utilizing corn husks—an underappreciated resource—Adam managed to slash production costs from an astonishing $75 per gram down to just $12. Even more remarkable, he reduced the production time from nine days to five, significantly boosting the potential supply of this vital medication.

When Adam first stepped onto the grand stage of the science fair, he carried not just his project, but also the hopes and dreams of his little village. “I cannot describe this feeling,” he later expressed. Winning such a major competition was a surprise beyond his wildest imagination. Who would have thought that a boy from a small European village could achieve such global recognition?

His innovation revolves around a streamlined process that reaches the end product with fewer steps—only ten instead of fifteen. This simplified route relies on furfuryl alcohol, a compound derived directly from corn husks. A series of precise chemical additions transforms this alcohol into aza-saccheride, paving the way to produce galidesivir more efficiently.

“He managed to shortcut the entire process,” remarked Chris RoDee, a judge at the competition and a retired chemist. The clarity and confidence with which Adam presented his findings, described by judges as “bulletproof,” captured the audience’s attention and admiration.

As part of his ongoing journey, Adam has already taken significant steps to protect his invention by filing for a preliminary patent. He’s excited to collaborate with a research group at the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava to further refine his method. With his $100,000 award, Adam dreams of launching a company focused on eco-friendly perfumes crafted from corn—a testament to his commitment to sustainability and innovation.
