In moments of profound loss, unexpected gestures of love can illuminate the darkest days. This heartwarming tale follows Marilyn, who, inspired by her husband’s final gift, transforms her sorrow into a beautiful legacy that brings joy to her community.

It was a gray morning when Marilyn Cudmore received a special delivery: a vibrant bouquet of daffodils. This unexpected gift arrived six months after the passing of her beloved husband, Stephen. Before his health declined, Stephen had arranged the delivery for Marilyn’s birthday, fully aware that he may not be there to celebrate.

Hello beautiful! Happy birthday, Steve,” the card read, a touching reminder of the love they shared. In that moment, Marilyn was flooded with memories of their last day together. She recalled Stephen sitting in their sunroom, gazing peacefully at the daffodils blooming outside. He smiled with such tranquility that it left an imprint on her heart.

Moved by the memory, Marilyn decided to create her own tribute. She envisioned planting daffodils along their street in East Sooke, British Columbia, ensuring Stephen’s memory would flourish in the form of beautiful flowers. Armed with hundreds of bulbs, she began to transform the landscape around her home.

As she dug into the soft earth, word spread among her friends, especially those from her book club. They were eager to help Marilyn honor Stephen’s legacy and soon became regular participants in her planting project. What started as an individual endeavor blossomed into a joyous community event.

Laughter filled the air as the group, affectionately calling themselves the ‘Spade Maids,’ met annually to plant new mixtures of daffodils. This joyful gathering even coincided with Steve’s birthday on October 26th, creating a double celebration filled with warmth and community spirit.

As the years passed, their efforts spread farther and wider, with plans to line the entire tree-lined neighborhood road with daffodils. “Imagine driving down East Sooke Road in March and April and just being surrounded by blooms,” Marilyn shared with delight, emphasizing the joy the flowers would bring to everyone.

Each year, Marilyn still receives her prearranged bouquet from Stephen, a bittersweet reminder that love spans beyond time and space. The bulbs planted by the Spade Maids grow deeper into the earth, allowing Marilyn’s love for Stephen—and the community’s joy—to flourish.

Through this beautiful act of remembrance, not only does Marilyn keep Stephen’s memory alive, but she also fills the world around her with vibrancy and hope, reminding us all of the enduring power of love.
