Her journey began at Johns Hopkins University, where Lauren’s passion for sustainable fashion blossomed. Graduating in 2020, she secured grant funding that allowed her to purchase a specialized machine known as an extruder. This device could transform shredded plastic cups into thread, enabling her bold vision to come to life.

Determined to make her textile dreams a reality, she utilized partnerships with fellow engineering colleges. They helped develop a non-toxic material that transformed the rough, plastic-like threads into something soft and wearable—perfect for cozy sweaters and stylish beanies.

Her big break came when Reynold’s Consumer Products, the parent company of Hefty, stepped in to support her venture. With additional funding, she secured the machinery necessary to establish her supply chain, which operates from North Carolina and Virginia, where the shredded cups are turned into yarn. This innovative yarn is then sent to a facility in Brooklyn, where a cutting-edge 3D knitting machine creates the garments without any unwanted fabric waste.

What’s remarkable about Lauren’s process is its environmental benefits. Traditional spun yarn often sheds microplastics into the environment during washing, posing a significant pollution risk. However, Lauren’s use of filament yarn, which is a continuous thread, minimizes this shedding. Moreover, the revolutionary 3D knitting technique eliminates fabric scraps, streamlining the production process further.
