What started out as a modest initiative offering $166 scholarships has blossomed significantly. Fast forward to today, and students like Zack Gapanski are celebrating their success with awards of $5,000! The changes in financial support illustrate how the community’s efforts have transformed lives.

As shown in Boyd Huppert’s inspiring “Land of 10,000 Stories,” this tradition goes beyond funding; it’s about reinforcing the message that no matter where life leads, young adults will always have a home in Swanville. “To me, it’s just this community saying, go be great,” Zach shared, emphasizing the encouragement that flows from this closely-knit group.

It all began with Chris Dunshee, a former school principal, and Royal Loven, who ran the local gas station. Concerned that their students might leave for larger districts, they brainstormed ways to keep their talent in town. Although the idea of putting up a billboard didn’t take off, the seed had been planted, leading to the inception of a unique tradition.

This year, the Dollars for Scholars program celebrated a milestone, awarding its one-millionth dollar, a significant achievement that speaks volumes about Swanville’s commitment to their youth. President Teresa Giese shared, “If you’re taking a gap year and you apply, we’ll still allocate money to you. The same goes for students going into the military.”
