Life has a way of connecting us, even across unfathomable distances. This heartwarming tale showcases the unbreakable bond between a mother and son, a letter that transcended tragedy, and the powerful message of love that endured over two decades.
In March 2001, Cee Cee Lyles sat down to pen a letter celebrating her young son, Jevon. He had just accomplished an amazing feat—reading an entire book by himself. As a devoted mother, she wanted to share this proud moment with his kindergarten teacher, Ms. Tammy Thurman.
“Dear Ms. Thurman, Jevon read a book last night that he brought home from the library. He read it from cover to cover. I told him I would write you a note and tell you what an outstanding job he did,” she wrote, her heart swelling with pride. “We are very proud of him and will continue to work with him at home. Thank you for your dedication and courage.”

Tragically, just a few months later, Cee Cee was on board United Airlines Flight 93 during the September 11 attacks. As chaos erupted around her, she showed incredible bravery; she called her husband to inform him that the passengers were planning to stand up and fight back against their hijackers.
The bravery exhibited by Cee Cee and her fellow passengers ultimately led to the plane crashing in a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, averting what could have been an even greater catastrophe in Washington, D.C. Though Jevon lost his mother that day, her spirit and love remained alive in the hearts of those who knew her.

For 24 years, that letter lay quietly in Ms. Thurman’s possession, a relic of a proud mother’s love. This year, driven by a shared sense of purpose, Ms. Thurman decided it was time to fulfill its destined journey. She reached out to Jon Shainman, a local reporter, and together they set out to deliver Cee Cee’s heartfelt words to her son.
Just recently, in September, the moment finally arrived. As Jevon unfolded the letter, Ms. Thurman’s voice echoed through the years, cheering him on as he read the words written so long ago. Accompanied by a class photo from his kindergarten days, the exchange was bursting with emotion.
“As a mom, I know how important it is to see your mother’s words,” Ms. Thurman shared. “She was a wonderful woman, and you were a wonderful student.”
Tears filled Jevon’s eyes as he read the message that had waited so patiently for its moment. “It’s very touching,” he said softly. “It feels so sweet and so much like something she would say.”
Now a father himself, with a beautiful three-month-old child, Jevon is determined to honor his mother’s memory each day. This treasured letter, now a tangible connection to her love and pride, serves as a reminder of the strength that endures, even in the face of loss.
