This is a tale of courage and resilience that reminds us how determination can lead to unexpected triumphs. In a heart-stopping moment at a harness race, a young woman showed just how far one will go to protect her beloved horse and the people around her.

Last Friday at Alexandra Park in New Zealand, harness racer Crystal Hackett faced a moment that would challenge anyone’s nerves. After just winning a thrilling race aboard her horse, Buddy Guy, excitement turned to chaos in an instant. The spirited horse suddenly spooked, bolting away and throwing Hackett from her sulky—a two-wheeled cart used in harness racing.

In that moment, all the teachings she had received as a child came rushing back. “Hang on as tight as you can, for as long as you can,” echoed in her mind, paired with the wisdom to prioritize safety for everyone involved. Despite feeling the jolt of the fall, Crystal clung tightly to the reins, mindful of the dangers that loomed if she let go.

The next few seconds were a whirlwind of adrenaline as she was dragged across the infield, her heart racing alongside Buddy Guy’s. Her determination to stay in control meant that neither she, her horse, nor the nearby spectators faced any grave danger. If she had released her grip, the sulky could have collided with the horse or even the fence, leading to potential injuries.

Fortunately, the chaos subsided as Buddy Guy eventually calmed down, allowing harness race workers to safely corral him. Crystal managed to escape with just a few scrapes and bruises. “I was a bit stiff the next day,” she laughed, “but you just get moving, and it goes away.”

As the incident gained traction online, the video showed her bravery, and people began to admire Crystal as a true harness-racing hero. Her story quickly became an inspiration, showcasing the connection between a rider and her horse—a bond filled with mutual trust and respect.

In a remarkable twist, moments later, Crystal mounted another horse and charged into the next race, crossing the finish line victorious once again. It was a comeback worth cheering for!
