In a heartwarming story of heroism and quick thinking, four Alabama National Guardsmen found themselves at the right place at the right time, demonstrating the power of teamwork and compassion. Their remarkable actions in Poland not only saved a life but also showcased the bond between nations and the spirit of service.

In the small town of Skwierzyna, approximately 80 miles from a bustling US Army headquarters in Poland, the motto “Always ready, always there” took on a profound meaning. Four soldiers from the Alabama National Guard—Sgt. 1st Class Alicia Haggins, Staff Sgt. Jacob Roberts, 2nd Lt. Indiana Rhodes, and Sgt. Justin Fagan—stopped at a local Burger King for a much-needed lunch break during their journey to a military training center.

As they settled in, a sudden commotion outside caught Haggins’s attention. Quickly assessing the situation, she noticed a man who had collapsed, unresponsive on the pavement. Without hesitation, she turned to her comrades, rallying them to respond to the emergency.

Upon reaching the man, they discovered he was barely breathing, with a faint pulse. Drawing on their training and experience, the team sprang into action, providing lifesaving measures that included CPR. Moments later, first responders arrived but recognized the importance of continuity in care, asking the Guardsmen to continue the chest compressions until the emergency team could take over.

As they worked tirelessly, Fagan recalled the challenging moments, stating, “At the start, his pulse was weak and unsteady. But as we continued, it became a real team effort.” While administering care, Haggins utilized a translation app to communicate with the man’s wife. She compassionately gathered vital medical history, learning that he had previously battled heart issues.

The intense CPR efforts stretched on for nearly half an hour, but hope flickered when the man’s pulse gradually stabilized. Just in time, a medical helicopter arrived to whisk him away to a hospital for further treatment. Amid their shared relief, hugs and tearful gratitude flowed, especially from the relieved wife who couldn’t thank the soldiers enough for their selfless actions.

“Because they were there, this family now has hope,” said Lt. Col. Cain Claxton, emphasizing the significance of their efforts. This incident serves as an inspiring reminder of the impact we can have on each other’s lives, especially for those representing our nation abroad. The four soldiers will receive commendations for their exemplary service, a testament to their bravery and unwavering commitment to helping others.

Let’s celebrate these American heroes who were there when it mattered most in Poland!
