In a heartwarming tale of perseverance and dedication, two herpetologists embarked on an extraordinary quest to rediscover a long-lost gecko species in the breathtaking Blyde River Canyon. Their journey not only showcased their passion for wildlife but also highlighted the importance of preserving biodiversity.

Picture this: a helicopter gracefully lands on a rugged cliff high above the lush valleys of South Africa. Out step two herpetologists, armed with determination instead of military gear. Their mission? To find the elusive Blyde River flat gecko, a creature that hadn’t graced the scientific community with its presence for three decades.

The last known sighting of this curious reptile was back in 1991, leaving scientists puzzled about its status. With other gecko species nearby bearing a striking resemblance, doubts arose regarding whether the flat gecko was still extant or just an overlooked juvenile of a similar type.

“The enigma of a species that has slipped into the shadows frustrates me,” shared Darren Pietersen, one of the duo from the Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT). His excitement was palpable as he detailed the years spent securing permits for this remarkable expedition.

After being airlifted to the specific spot where the gecko had once been spotted, Pietersen and his colleague, John Davies, set up camp. With anticipation tingling in the air, they immersed themselves in the rugged beauty of Blyde River Canyon, a place steeped in both danger and wonder.

It wasn’t long before luck smiled upon them. Over just two to three days, they identified a remarkable 20 to 30 geckos! The thrill of discovery washed over them as they photographed several and collected tissue samples to further investigate this remarkable species.

LOST AND FOUND:

The EWT later announced that these samples would pave the way for a comprehensive genetic study, potentially confirming the gecko’s status as a unique species. This crucial research will help determine the gecko’s threats and the necessary steps to ensure its survival.

The journey was not without its challenges, as the team navigated through rocky terrain, all while keeping an eye out for hippos and crocodiles lurking nearby. Nonetheless, their love for these hidden gems of nature propelled them forward.

As they documented their findings, the words of Petersen echoed true: “It’s the harder-to-find species that deserve our attention.” His passion for conservation was evident, reminding us all of the importance of preserving even the smallest creatures that play a part in our world.
