Celebrations erupted as governments and conservation organizations announced the formation of one of the most ambitious marine reserves ever created, aptly named “Macronesia.” Nestled in the northeastern Atlantic, this sanctuary promises safety for 32 species of whales and dolphins, covering a crucial migratory route known for its rich marine biodiversity.

This monumental resolution was passed at the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) World Conservation Congress, an event that showcases global commitment to preserving our planet’s natural wonders. With an overwhelming 96.5% support, this resolution set the groundwork for the exciting new Macaronesia Sanctuary, encompassing the waters surrounding the stunning Azores, the enchanting Canary Islands, Cape Verde, and Madeira.

The idea for this sanctuary was championed by Loro Parque Fundación, a conservation organization based in the Canary Islands, founded by the passionate German biologist Wolfgang Kiessling. For over three decades, this organization has dedicated itself to saving endangered species and has successfully brought 18 species back from the brink of extinction. Yet, the dream of establishing the Macronesia Sanctuary has always been Wolfgang’s guiding star.

“The Macaronesia Sanctuary embodies a collective hope — a partnership between science, institutions, and society,” Wolfgang remarked with pride. “Its approval by the IUCN highlights that united efforts are our strongest ally in protecting the ocean’s treasures.”

The sanctuary is designed to shield whales from a host of human-induced dangers, including cruel fishing practices, hazardous underwater noise, and the looming threat of deep-sea mining. Remarkably, 84% of all dolphin and whale species in the Atlantic utilize the Macronesia waters at some point in their journeys, making this sanctuary a vital refuge.

In a further boost to marine conservation, a remarkable 2024 initiative saw public universities across all Macaronesia nations coming together to sign the Marine Biodiversity Manifesto. This alliance, endorsed by Loro Parque Fundación, aims to foster research and support for marine preservation efforts in the region.

While the specifics of how the sanctuary will be managed and enforced are still being worked out, the spirit of collaboration and optimism surrounding this initiative is palpable. It signifies a hopeful stride towards a more sustainable future for our oceans, reminding us that when we work together, we can create waves of positive change.

Let’s spread the word about this incredible commitment to protecting our North Atlantic marine life!
