Sometimes, the simplest ideas can lead to the most joyful moments. The Water Lily Weigh-Off hosted by the Denver Botanic Gardens brought together enthusiasts from across the globe to celebrate the extraordinary strength of water lilies, in a delightful competition that not only highlighted nature’s wonders but also fostered a sense of community.
In an exciting twist of botanical fun, the Denver Botanic Gardens recently organized the Water Lily Weigh-Off, inviting participants from over 30 zoos and gardens in nine countries. The goal? To see just how much weight a water lily pad, often graced by frogs and beauty, could hold before it sank.
The competition showcased remarkable strength hidden in these seemingly delicate aquatic plants. Among the highlights was a lily from the Missouri Botanic Gardens that managed to hold a staggering 182 pounds. But the real winner emerged from Florida’s Bok Tower Gardens, which pushed the limit to an impressive 183 pounds!
As botanists playfully stacked everything from sandbags to whimsical oranges on the lily pads, the videos shared online captured a spirit of joy and creativity. The simple act of playing with weight on a surface of floating leaves turned into a heartwarming spectacle enjoyed by many.
Vanessa Callahan, the Denver Botanic Gardens’ assistant manager of learning engagement, expressed her pride in how the event evolved from a lighthearted idea into an international celebration. “It’s really been a joy to see so much creativity and heartfelt storytelling from the participating gardens,” she shared with local news, beaming as she described the fun had by all.
In third place was a lily at the Huntsville Botanical Garden in Alabama, which supported 176 pounds, reminding everyone of the groundbreaking strength of these beautiful plants.
The stars of this competition were none other than the Victoria cruziana and Victoria amazonica, magnificent giant water lilies known to grow pads that can reach up to six feet in diameter within just three months. These large pads absorb sunlight and convert it into energy, all while showcasing their robust design.
Remarkably engineered, the lily pads feature intricate networks of radiating ribs and cross-veins, making them surprisingly strong. Their edges turn upward to prevent water from accumulating, and the underside is covered with sharp barbs, protecting against unwanted visitors.
These plants are not only a wonder of nature but have also inspired innovations. The legendary architect Frank Lloyd Wright admired their structural integrity and drew inspiration from them for his designs, highlighting how creativity in nature can resonate in unexpected ways.
As the weigh-off concluded, it wasn’t just about who won; it was a celebration of nature’s beauty and strength, reminding people of the playful possibilities in the natural world. Watching the videos and seeing the creative entries brought smiles and laughter, truly showing that fun can thrive in the smallest seeds of imagination.
