In times of crisis, it’s everyday heroes who shine the brightest. This heartwarming account centers around a Coast Guard officer’s brave actions during unexpected flooding in Texas, where he proved that courage knows no bounds.
Petty Officer Scott Ruskan, hailing from New Jersey, found himself in the midst of chaos when the Guadalupe River swelled furiously, inundating the Texas hill country. Heavy rainfall of 5 to 11 inches created a desperate situation, particularly at a girls’ summer camp—Camp Mystic—caught directly in the flood’s path.
This wasn’t just any day for Ruskan; it was his inaugural rescue mission. Yet, amidst the storm’s fury, he remained unwavering and focused. Arriving via helicopter, Ruskan was met with the sight of around 200 frightened campers gathered at the site.
“We knew we had to get them out,” Ruskan recalled with determination. Without hesitation, he directed the operation to airlift as many individuals as possible to safety.
Yet, the conditions were dire. Tropical Storm Barry’s impact made flying particularly dangerous, leading the pilot to attempt landing four times before finally succeeding. The relentless rain had washed away bridges and roadways, cutting off escape routes.
“There was no way to access the camp by conventional means,” said Ruskan. “The rising waters made any boat rescue impossible.” Communication was equally compromised; for three hours, he had no contact with the outside world, intensifying the urgency to act quickly.
Despite these challenges, his resolve didn’t waver. Alongside fellow rescuers, he guided the frightened campers in groups of 10 to 15, carefully coordinating their evacuation. Each successful airlift brought waves of relief to him and the bright-eyed children.
In a post-evacuation statement, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem praised Ruskan as “an American hero.” However, true to his humble nature, Ruskan insisted that he was merely doing his job—one that anyone could have stepped up to do in such critical moments.
As the skies began to clear and the chaos subsided, the power of community, courage, and quick thinking stood tall, reminding us all that heroes can emerge from the most unexpected places.
