Looking to make OLED displays brighter and more efficient? Scientists at the Fraunhofer Institute for Photonic Microsystems IPMS have developed a high-voltage CMOS backplane that allows for exceptionally bright microdisplays. These new displays will be showcased at the SID Display Week 2025 event in San José, California.
OLED microdisplays are widely used in AR glasses, VR headsets, and military devices due to their vibrant colors and high visibility. While microLEDs are often touted as an alternative for high brightness, OLEDs have the advantage of lower current density requirements, making them more efficient and reliable for long-term use.
By stacking multiple OLED layers on a high-voltage CMOS backplane, researchers have been able to achieve brightness levels of over 10,000 cd/m². This advancement opens up new opportunities for very bright OLED microdisplays in various applications.
Fraunhofer IPMS has a track record of developing cutting-edge display technologies, and they are eager to bring this new backplane technology to market through collaborations with industry partners. Stay tuned for more exciting developments in the world of display technology!
