Enter hydrogen boride (HB) nanosheets—two-dimensional materials that are creating a buzz in the scientific community for their versatility and effectiveness.

The journey began with Professor Takahiro Kondo’s work at the University of Tsukuba, where he and his team first explored the potential of HB nanosheets for applications in electronics and energy storage. However, a group of talented researchers from the Institute of Science Tokyo, including Professor Masahiro Miyauchi and Associate Professor Akira Yamaguchi, have recently unveiled their unexpected antimicrobial capabilities.

In a study published in the Journal of Materials Chemistry B, the team discovered that these nanosheets can effectively deactivate viruses, bacteria, and fungi within just ten minutes at room temperature—even in complete darkness! This means they could be a game-changer for infection control.

The research team created clear films by applying a solution of HB nanosheets onto glass surfaces. They then subjected these films to rigorous testing against various pathogens, including the notorious SARS-CoV-2 and other viruses and bacteria. Remarkably, they found that the HB coatings rendered these harmful agents undetectable in no time at all.

Unlike traditional metal-based antimicrobials that can be opaque or leach into the environment, HB nanosheets are unique. They maintain their optical clarity and do not require harmful light activation, making them all the more appealing for everyday use.

After conducting tests that mimic real-life conditions—such as pathogens being transferred from coughing or sneezing—the researchers confirmed that these innovative coatings could significantly reduce the risk of infection in our homes, schools, and public spaces. From coatings on textiles to surfaces in high-traffic areas, the possibilities for HB nanosheets are exciting and endless.
