The secret ingredient? A radioactive isotope of carbon known as carbon-14, beautifully encased in the hardest material on Earth: diamond. This unique construction allows the battery to safely harness the power of carbon-14 while remaining stable and usable in various settings.

Sara Clark, who directs the Tritium Fuel Cycle at UKAEA, insists these diamond batteries represent a promising leap forward. “They offer a safe, sustainable method to generate continuous microwatt levels of power,” she explains. The process mimics how solar panels work, capturing electrons emitted from the carbon-14, beautifully wrapped in a diamond shell.

What makes this technology particularly spectacular is the half-life of carbon-14, which is about 5,700 years. This means the battery will provide consistent power over millennia—ideal for spacecraft, satellites, and even medical devices like pacemakers that cannot be easily accessed for battery changes.

Professor Tom Scott from the University of Bristol is equally excited about the potential applications of this micropower technology. “From space technologies to security devices and medical implants, we see vast opportunities ahead. Our collaboration with industry and research partners will be key in exploring these avenues.”

This invention lends a whole new meaning to the saying “diamonds are forever”—now, they can also power the future!
