In a world where the secrets to better health often seem elusive, a recent study shines a light on the power of something as simple as beetroot juice. A recent study conducted by researchers at the University of Exeter in England has shown that drinking beetroot juice can have remarkable benefits for older adults, particularly in controlling blood pressure. This lively research followed previous findings that highlighted the positive effects of a diet rich in nitrates, naturally abundant in vegetables, to mitigate heart disease risks.

“Encouraging older adults to eat more nitrate-rich vegetables could have significant long-term health benefits,” noted Professor Anni Vanhatalo, one of the study’s authors. She reassured those who might not be fans of beetroot that there are plenty of alternatives like spinach and kale that pack a similar punch!
The study involved 39 adults under 30 and 36 adults in their 60s and 70s. It revealed that drinking the juice altered the participants’ oral microbiomes—changes that were strikingly different between the age groups. Not only did the older adults show a decrease in undesirable bacteria in their mouths, but they also experienced a flourish of beneficial bacteria. This is crucial because an imbalance between the two can impede the conversion of nitrates into nitric oxide, hampering blood vessel function and blood pressure regulation.
After consuming beetroot juice, older participants saw a notable reduction in a harmful bacteria called Prevotella and a growth in Neisseria, which promotes health. Those who started the study with higher blood pressure benefited from this tasty intervention, with marked improvements that a placebo did not offer.
“This research highlights how nitrate-rich foods can alter oral microbiomes, potentially reducing inflammation and lowering blood pressure for older individuals,” stated co-author Professor Andy Jones. More extensive studies look promising, especially to explore how lifestyle or gender might change these responses.
Dr. Lee Beniston, from the funding body BBSRC, excitedly added that understanding how dietary nitrates influence oral bacteria with regards to blood pressure opens up new avenues for enhancing vascular health using good nutrition.
