In a delightful fusion of art and science, researchers have developed a groundbreaking way to tune into the underwater symphony of coral reefs. By capturing the sounds of vibrantly diverse marine life, they are uncovering secrets that could help protect our oceans. The enchanting world of coral reefs is alive with a cacophony of sounds—from the gentle pops of shrimp to the melodic chatter of fish. For a long time, scientists have utilized underwater microphones to monitor these ecosystems, but the challenge lay in identifying which fish were making which sounds amidst the vibrant din.

Recently, an innovative collaboration between the FishEye Collaborative, the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, and Aalto University has led to the creation of an incredible tool: the Omnidirectional Underwater Passive Acoustic Camera (UPAC-360). This remarkable device combines 360-degree visuals with audio recordings, enabling researchers to pinpoint the individual sounds made by various fish species.

After deploying this technology in the coral reefs of Curaçao, the team successfully identified an astonishing 46 types of fish, many of which had never been known to produce sounds before. “The diversity of fish sounds on a coral reef rivals that of birds in a rainforest,” states Marc Dantzker, the project’s lead author and director of the FishEye Collaborative. This discovery not only expands our understanding but also emphasizes the rich biodiversity that coral reefs harbor.

But how does it all work? The UPAC-360 features Spatial Audio technology that captures sound directions, creating a visual representation of the soundscape. When combined with the 360-degree footage, it allows scientists to match each sound to its source. This innovative approach paves the way for a treasure trove of information, making it possible to analyze the calling patterns of different fish in real-time.

The team has made their extensive library of fish sounds available for everyone, inviting nature lovers and scientists alike to explore at fisheyecollaborative.org/library. This interactive collection is set to become an invaluable resource, potentially training machine learning systems to identify fish species through their sounds, similar to how bird identification apps work.

While the journey to create a comprehensive “Merlin” app for the oceans is still ongoing, the scientists are optimistic about their findings contributing to marine conservation efforts. According to Aaron Rice, a senior author on the study, “The sounds we’re identifying provide essential insights for scientists and conservationists today.”

Dantzker highlights the significance of this research: “We’re making soundscapes decodable, transforming acoustic monitoring into a potent tool for ocean conservation.” By unveiling the identities of these elusive marine voices, researchers are setting the stage for a more profound understanding of reef health and broader ocean monitoring.

With plans to extend their research to other coral hotspots like Hawai’i and Indonesia, the team is dedicated to not only enhancing our knowledge of marine life but also generating actionable strategies to protect these vital ecosystems for generations to come.
